Pioneering technology lawyer joins city firm

Mills & Reeve has recruited pioneering technology lawyer and founder of Technology Law Alliance, Jagvinder Singh Kang, to its Midlands office in Birmingham.

With Jagvinder joining as new international head of IT, the high-profile partner appointment sends the clear message to the legal industry that Mills & Reeve is determined to go “head to head” with the Magic Circle and other leading law firms in the field of technology law.
Jagvinder is well-known for shaking up the technology law market since founding specialist law firm, Technology Law Alliance in 2003. He has built up a market-leading reputation in the technology law field, having advised on billions of pounds worth of technology transactions, involving some of the largest global companies.

As a result, he has been consistently recognised by both Legal 500 and Chambers as an “elite technology lawyer”, having been top ranked by both legal directories for nine consecutive years. Jagvinder has also been inducted into Legal 500’s “Hall of Fame” in 2019, for his excellence in the field of technology law.

His expertise spans over 20 years on mission-critical and high-value IT, data protection and technology contracts for both customers and suppliers of technology solutions and services.

Jagvinder said: “I launched a boutique law firm from a standing start. By the time I decided to leave, it was viewed in the field of technology law as equal, if not better, than the likes of Clifford Chance and Slaughter and May. I’m truly excited by what I can now help accomplish with the backing of a leading full-service UK law firm, which already has heavyweight specialist lawyers, a great national reputation, as well as strong international alliances.”
Jagvinder has a unique background, being triple qualified as a technology lawyer, a specialist data protection lawyer, and a qualified software engineer with a first class honours degree in computer science and software engineering. He has also completed the academic requirements for chartered engineer status.

Jagvinder added: “This unique background allows me to better advise my clients, by applying my understanding of the underlying technology to the associated technology law issues.”

This powerful combination has won him instructions on national and international technology deals, including global connected car projects for some of the largest automotive companies in the world, as well as GDPR and data protection compliance instructions for some of the largest global organisations in their industry sectors.

Steve Allen, Head of Mills & Reeve’s Birmingham office, said: “It’s my pleasure to welcome Jagvinder to the Midlands office. His appointment is an exciting opportunity to expand our offer, bolster our ambitious IT law team and spread our international reach. He is a true leader in his field.

“With innovation at the heart of what we do – embodied in the Midlands by our biennial Innovation 50 campaign – Jagvinder’s impressive credentials and forward-thinking mind-set makes him a perfect fit."
