The general manager has been appointed for Birmingham’s newest four-star hotel. Located on the site of the former Royal Angus hotel in the Snow Hill area of the city, Michael Shaw has now taken over the reins of the 186-bedroom DoubleTree by Hilton hotel.
Working in the highly-competitive UK market, Michael has managed properties in London, Oxfordshire, The Midlands, Yorkshire and Northwest. The experienced hotelier has also worked for some of the world’s best-known hotel brands such as Hilton, Marriott, Accor and Wyndham as well as for private hotel management groups.
The first DoubleTree by Hilton in Birmingham is creating 110 full and part-time jobs and will include two Marco Pierre White branded concepts including a Mr White’s English Chophouse restaurant and Marconi Coffee shop.
Comprising an investment of £25 million, it will bring much-needed, high-end quality accommodation that is representative of the city’s status as a major location for both business and leisure.
Part of the refurbishment includes the addition of two extra floors as well as a roof top terrace and is, according to the team behind the work, indicative of the city’s popularity for both business and leisure guests and demand for high-end hotel rooms and facilities.
Adjacent to St Chad’s Queensway (A4400), the well-known and popular venue was also a Thistle Hotel and closed about 18 months ago.
Michael said: “The arrival of the DoubleTree brand is hugely exciting news for Birmingham and is exactly what the city needs from both a business and tourist destination perspective. It’s regarded as being one of the world’s best four-star brands and often influences people’s decisions on where they want to stay. For DoubleTree to bring one of its flagship hotels to Birmingham also shows that it places the city in very high esteem.
“It’s an incredible time for Birmingham with unprecedented levels of inward investment and infrastructure projects. We’re now recruiting the team and are on the lookout for those who would like to consider working for one of the world’s foremost four-star hotel brands.”
