Luxury car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover has announced a major investment into one of its plants in Birmingham.
The site in Castle Bromwich is expected to start producing a new all-electric Jaguar XJ and other electric models.
“Convenience and affordability are the two key enablers to drive the uptake of electric vehicles to the levels that we all need,” said Professor Dr Ralf Speth, chief executive of Jaguar Land Rover.
“Charging should be as easy as re-fuelling a conventional vehicle. Affordability will only be achieved if we make batteries here in the UK, close to vehicle production, to avoid the cost and safety risk of importing from abroad.
“The UK has the raw materials, scientific research in our universities and an existing supplier base to put the UK at the leading edge of mobility and job creation.”
Responding to the news, West Midlands CBI Regional Director Richard Butler said: “This is fantastic news that the Midlands will be powering the electric car revolution.
“This is a shot in the arm for UK manufacturing and the automotive industry in particular. Jaguar Land Rover continues to be a great British success story which provides a real boost to its supply chain and the wider economy.
“After the government legislated for net zero, this news is another positive step forward. Climate leadership can drive UK competitiveness and secure long-term prosperity.”
