Boost for businesses

How West Midlands businesses are scaling with free support

Growing a business rarely happens on its own. It takes access to the right information, expert guidance, operational improvements, and, in many cases, financial support. Business Growth West Midlands (BGWM) helps companies across the region take those next steps, whether that means investing in equipment, refining strategy, entering new markets, or improving internal processes. Businesses of all sizes and sectors are working with BGWM advisers to overcome barriers to growth and build long-term success.

BGWM works closely with business owners to understand their challenges and match them with the most appropriate support. This can include helping businesses access grant funding, build export plans, strengthen workforce capabilities, or implement sustainability initiatives. The value of this support lies in how tailored it is and how it translates into practical action.

Strategic growth and business planning

The Plough in Harborne, a well-loved hospitality venue, worked with BGWM to strengthen its growth strategy and explore new revenue opportunities. Founder Adam Johnson said: "The support has certainly accelerated our growth." With tailored guidance, The Plough refined its planning and positioned itself for future development in a competitive market.

Grant funding to improve productivity and efficiency

In Coventry, manufacturing business Whiteley Brooks received over £100,000 in grant funding to support operational improvements. Director Jat Purewal said: "The process was seamless, with great advice and a step-by-step process. The investment has helped us improve quality and reduce lead times." The funding enabled the company to enhance product quality and delivery performance, strengthening its competitiveness.

Similarly, Polish Bakery Mazowsze Ltd (see caption at bottom) in Walsall accessed £70,000 in funding to upgrade production equipment and expand capacity. Co-owner Joanna Podolak said: "This investment will unlock our growth into new markets, much sooner than we could have managed it without support. We're grateful for the help, and what it means for our future." The investment improved efficiency and enabled the bakery to meet growing customer demand.

Supporting international expansion

Expanding into overseas markets can open new opportunities. Coventry-based SLT Media used BGWM’s Export Support Programme to develop its international strategy and client base. Director Paulina Patrykowska said, "Thanks to the BGWM Export Support Programme, I gained the confidence, knowledge and structure I needed to take that leap. It helped me turn an idea into a clear plan, and now I'm building international connections that will grow our business for years to come." The support helped SLT Media diversify revenue streams and build international relationships.

Enabling long-term growth and innovation

BGWM also provides practical, non-financial guidance to help businesses innovate and improve resilience.

NuWash Laundry, a Walsall-based commercial laundry service, received tailored advice to develop its sustainability and innovation strategy. With this support, NuWash improved processes, strengthened its competitive offering, and enhanced long-term performance.

Alongside financial and export support, BGWM offers guidance on workforce development, recruitment, and skills planning to help businesses build teams capable of sustaining growth.

Supporting West Midlands businesses to scale

From strategic planning and export guidance to funding and workforce advice, BGWM equips businesses with the tools they need to grow with confidence.
