Major makeover for well-known building

One of Birmingham’s most well-known buildings has had a major interior makeover. The Old Fire Station student accommodation on Aston Street, formerly the city’s Central Fire Station, has been owned and operated by Birmingham-based Student Roost since 2018.

Student Roost has now given the social spaces a full refurbishment, with furniture more in keeping with the 1930s building, creating a stylish yet relaxing space in a building steeped in history. Students living at the property can now enjoy a night in front of the plasma screen, plan a video game or pool tournament, secure a quiet corner to study, or catch-up with friends and flatmates.

The building is home to up to 430 students studying at Aston University, Birmingham City University, and the University of Birmingham each year, and has featured on TV programmes such as Channel 4’s Grand Designs and the hit BBC drama Line of Duty.

With its art deco interior, original working 1930s lift, fireman’s pole, and drill tower, it’s easy to understand why the Grade II listed building and former operational fire station and West Midlands Fire Service headquarters is one of the most sought-after student accommodations in the city. It’s previously been named as one of Student Roost’s most Instagrammed properties, even before the recent makeover.

As well as 24-hour customer service from on-site team members, a variety of room options including en-suite and mezzanine studio, and all bills included within rent, students can access a range of facilities. These include a free-to-use, fully-equipped gym, private study room with original 1930s features, and the recently refurbished social space.

Arifah Begum, who’s living at The Old Fire Station while studying at Aston University, has already been enjoying the new space and using it to host events for her fellow residents.

She said: “I’ve always used the social space, and the new refurb is so much better and nicer to spend time in. It’s more modern, with lots of space for students to chill with friends and more space to unwind after a stressful day at uni. It’s so fresh and new and really feels like home. I’ve taken so many photos for my social media!

“I recently hosted a henna masterclass in the social space with all Indian, Bengali, and Pakistani students who live at The Old Fire Station. I’ve lived here for three years, and I’ve rebooked for my final year. I can’t wait to see what events and activities will take place in the social space over the summer and throughout the next year.”

Adam Simmons, regional operations manager for Student Roost, said: “The Old Fire Station is such an iconic Birmingham building, and still has such a prominent position in the city’s landscape almost 90 years after it opened in 1935.

“Although the building's original features and striking exterior are a huge talking point for students, whether they are seeing it for the first time or have lived with us for several years, we wanted to create a more modern space for our residents to relax, meet friends, and unwind after a week of lectures, seminars and studying."
